How to taste whisky like a pro
Whisky can feel complicated, but tasting it does not have to be. With a few simple habits, you will notice more aromas, understand the flavours better and enjoy the glass more.
1. Use the right glass
A tulip-shaped glass, like a Glencairn glass, gathers the aromas and makes it easier to smell the whisky. A wide tumbler looks classic, but it is not the best tool for tasting.
2. Look at the colour
Hold the glass up to the light. Colour can give clues about cask type and age, but do not overread it. Some whiskies are naturally pale and still packed with flavour.
3. Smell gently
Do not stick your nose deep into the glass and inhale hard. Whisky has alcohol, and that can numb your senses. Smell gently from a little distance and move the glass around.
4. Take a small sip
Let the whisky cover your tongue. The first sip often wakes up your palate, so the second sip usually tells you more.
5. Add a few drops of water
Water can open the whisky and reveal new aromas. Start with just a few drops. You can always add more, but you cannot take it back out.
6. Look for categories, not perfect words
You do not need to name every aroma. Start simple: fruit, smoke, spice, sweetness, wood, flowers, herbs or sea. Then get more specific if you want.
7. Compare two whiskies
The easiest way to learn is to taste side by side. Try bourbon next to Scotch, or Speyside next to Islay. Differences become much clearer.
Bonus tip: trust your own palate
There are no wrong tasting notes if they are honest. If you smell banana, campfire or old books, that is part of your experience.
