Gin and tonic: the perfect G&T at home
A gin and tonic looks simple, and it is. But small details make a big difference. The right gin, tonic, garnish and temperature can turn an ordinary drink into something genuinely delicious.
Start with the gin
Gin is built on juniper, but the rest can vary wildly. Some gins are citrusy, some are floral, some are spicy, and some lean into Nordic botanicals.
Pick a gin you actually like neat, then build around it.
Choose the right tonic
Tonic is not just filler. Since it makes up most of the drink, it matters a lot. A dry, crisp tonic works well with classic London Dry gin. A softer or more aromatic tonic can work beautifully with floral or fruity gins.
Use plenty of ice
More ice means a colder drink and slower dilution. Fill the glass properly. A half-empty glass with two sad cubes will melt quickly and make the drink watery.
Get the proportions right
A good starting point is:
- •1 part gin
- •2 parts tonic
If the gin is intense, use a little more tonic. If it is delicate, keep the tonic in check.
Garnish with intention
Garnish should support the gin, not decorate it randomly. Try:
- •Lemon or grapefruit peel for citrusy gin
- •Cucumber for fresh, light gin
- •Rosemary or thyme for herbal gin
- •Berries for fruity Nordic gin
Build it gently
Add ice, pour gin, add tonic slowly and stir gently once or twice. Too much stirring knocks out the bubbles.
