Bourbon vs. Scotch - a simple guide
Whisky is a broad word that covers many different styles. The two most famous are bourbon from the USA and Scotch from Scotland. So what is the actual difference?
Origin and rules
Scotch whisky must be made in Scotland and aged for at least three years in oak casks. It is mainly made from malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills.
Bourbon must be made in the USA, not necessarily Kentucky even though most of it is, and contain at least 51% corn. It is aged in new, charred oak barrels.
Flavour differences
- •Scotch varies a lot by region. Highland whiskies are often fruity and spicy, while Islay whiskies are smoky and maritime.
- •Bourbon is generally sweeter, with notes of vanilla, caramel and oak from the charred barrels.
Which one should you try?
If you like sweet, rounded flavours, start with bourbon. If you prefer complexity and variety, explore Scotch.
